Albino Mahumana: Contemporary Painter from Mozambique

ALBINO MAHUMANA
Mozambique | Born in 1970
Albino Mahumana is a Mozambican visual artist and photojournalist born in Maputo in 1970. His artistic training began in childhood under the guidance of his father, the renowned visual artist Manqueu Valente Mahumana; with him, he established the foundations of his creative language and honed various painting techniques.
Throughout his career, Albino has explored multiple mediums and materials, including canvas, wood, glass, gourds, and metal. Since 2017, he has dedicated himself intensively to painting, creating works that reflect daily life in Mozambique. His compositions portray scenes of working women, local markets, community traditions, family life, and children's games, sensitively showcasing his country's cultural and human richness.
Alongside his artistic output, he has built a distinguished career as a photojournalist, photo editor, and cultural journalist, collaborating with major national and international media outlets. He has also conducted courses and workshops in photography and visual arts, contributing to the training of new generations of artists.
His work has garnered international recognition, earning awards and distinctions at prominent art events—particularly in South Korea, Portugal, and Mozambique. Notable among these are the Best Artist Award at the 11th Geoje International Art Festival (2025) and the Excellence Award and Encouragement Award at the 10th Geoje International Art Festival (2024).
Currently, Albino Mahumana continues to explore new techniques and develop a body of work committed to the identity, memory, and everyday experiences of the Mozambican people.
